What is CBN?
Simply put, CBN is cannabinol, an oxidation product of THC. CBN was the first cannabinoid to be identified, probably due to its abundance in dried cannabis plants. Although CBN is a direct metabolite of THC, it has no psychoactive effects. Instead, it is known for something else: its sleep-inducing abilities. CBN is sometimes called the Sleep Cannabinoid.

What is CBN good for?
Fights insomnia, even unresponsive ones
CBN has a major one-up on orthodox sleep aids; the entourage effect. CBN does not encourage sleep alone. CBN works with the terpenoids and flavonoids present in the plant to induce restful sleep. So, pure CBD oils may not be as potent as a week-old weed stash.
Neuroprotectant in Glaucoma cases
Glaucoma is vision loss caused by high intraocular pressure. Topical CBN can retard glaucoma by increasing the survival rate of retina cells. In this way, CBN protects the nerve cells from damage caused by increased pressures.
Other health benefits of CBN;
- CBN displays some antiepileptic effects
- Appetite stimulation
- CBN is a mild painkiller
How does CBN work?
Despite oxidation, CBN interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), just like THC would. CBN binds to the CB1 receptors in the brain and spinal cord, but instead of producing psychoactivity, it displays somnolence.
Will CBN affect my drug test?
Although CBN is not psychoactive, it may still show up on a drug test. This is because the current testing systems have many loopholes and so cannot differentiate controlled substances from safe ones like CBN.
The chances of CBN showing up in your urinalysis increase with the amount of CBN you’ve ingested. According to the University of Utah, you need five times as much CBN as you would THC to get a false positive result.
What strains are high in CBN?
Bubble Gum
Purple Cadillac
Durban Poison
Blackberry
Death Bubba
